Boosting Biodiversity through Tree Planting with Make It Wild
In July 2024, we gave roots to a new relationship with Make It Wild to promote sustainability within our agency. We plant a new tree for every new client we onboard at Halston B2B as part of our efforts to increase biodiversity in the region. So far, six trees have been planted in our clients’ names, and we’re loving the difference they’re making to ancient woodlands across Yorkshire!
Read on to find out more about Make It Wild, our partnership with them, and how tree planting absorbs carbon, produces oxygen, and boosts biodiversity – today, and for years to come.
What is Make It Wild?
The idea for Make It Wild came about in 2010 from Christopher Neave, a businessman, and Helen Neave, a Consultant Surgeon.
They’d had enough of hearing that wildlife (think hedgehogs, bees, butterflies etc) were struggling – and they took it upon themselves to do something about it.
Giving back to nature
Buying a 26-acre field, the Neave family set out to ‘give back to nature’. With the help of expert advice, they:
- Planted 20,000 trees
- Dug 10 ponds
- Sowed wildflower seeds
- Set up bat and bird boxes
Starting something special
Fast-forward to summer 2017 and the field was thriving with hare, deer, birdsong, and more.
Realising they’d achieved something rather special, Christopher and Helen were inspired to start Make It Wild.
Boosting biodiversity through rewilding
They’ve since been running several initiatives to support and promote biodiversity across a growing number of locations in the UK (like Yorkshire and the Peak District). For example:
- Tree planting
- Team conversation days
- Pond digging
- Wildflower hay meadow restoration
- Ancient woodland protection
Halston B2B’s partnership with Make It Wild
In March 2024, Make It Wild planted their 80,000th tree – and since, we’ve added six. Our B2B marketing agency’s own foundations were laid back in 2017, too, and we’ve always taken pride in the types of clients we work with and the relationships we share with them.
From GreenTechs and AgriTechs to our sister brand, Sustainability Partnerships, many of our clients share the same sustainability conscious that we do. We figured it was time we should be giving something back to our planet and boosting biodiversity in our region.
Make It Wild seemed the perfect choice.
We were delighted when they agreed to plant a tree for every new client we onboard at Halston B2B.
At the end of each quarter, we let them know how many clients we’ve taken on, and they plant a tree in those business’s names.

Field trip time
In August 2024, the Halston B2B team took a day trip to Make It Wild’s Bank Wood site for a tour of its woodlands and rewilding activities. Check out some snaps from the day!

How does tree planting influence biodiversity?
- When Make It Wild plants a tree, the grass between the tree and others isn’t mowed or grazed – meaning it can grow.
- The numbers of animals like mice and voles increase – good news for barn owls and other birds of prey!
- As the trees themselves get bigger, more microclimates develop thanks to shade and cooling from the tree’s leaves and branches.
- Once the trees have fruits, they become a source of food for insects, small mammals, and birds.
- When the trees drop their leaves in line with the seasons, microscopic creatures decompose the leaves and provide a carbon-rich basis for healthy and improved soil.
- Underneath the soil, and the tree roots interact with fungal networks. In a sense, they establish a ‘communication’ system thanks to these messengers and transport links.
- All in all, the more trees we have in an area, the more shelter and filtered, clean fresh water there is – and the less chance there is of flooding and/or soil erosion.
We love you, Mother Nature!
Future tree planting at Halston B2B
Our partnership with Make It Wild has brought joy to our team and our clients, not to mention a biodiversity boost to Make It Wild’s woodlands. We’re looking forward to seeing the number of trees planted in our clients’ names increase in the years ahead.
Keep your eyes peeled for more photos of our team taking part in more of Make It Wild’s rewilding activities, too. We’re hoping to actually plant some trees ourselves at one of their sites, soon!
Common questions about our tree planting partnership
How does a client know where its tree has been planted?
Once Make It Wild have planted a tree in a new client’s name, they send us an aerial photo of where it’s positioned, which we share with the client.
What’re the benefits of planting trees to nature?
Supporting and boosting biodiversity and providing more space for wildlife are two of the biggest benefits our tree planting agreement has on nature. Our friends at Make It Wild state trees ‘clean the air of pollutants’ and attract insects, birds and small mammals, increasing biodiversity of the area. Did you know trees also reduce flooding? When they absorb water, trees help to stabilise soils and prevent soil erosion.
