A typical Tuesday
for a Senior
B2B Content Writer

Hi! 👋

We’ll dive straight in, shall we?

Here’s what I get up to in a ‘usual’ day as a Senior B2B Content Writer.

07:15

My alarm goes off. I know I’ve got 5 minutes to snooze before my ‘real’ alarm goes off, so it’s eye-mask firmly back on despite an attention-seeking grumble from my tummy.

07:20

The ‘it’s time to get up now’ alarm goes off and I have a quick check of WhatsApp and today’s headlines. I’m a morning person, so the radio is on loud before I roll out of bed (literally) to get ready for the day.

Mug of coffee

08:30ish

After a 20-minute walk come rain, shine, sleet, or hail (shoutout to the Great British weather!), I arrive at Halston Group HQ. Like any sane person, my overwhelming priority is to make a coffee and give today’s office pooches a small fuss, before scanning my inbox and Teams app for anything urgent*.

*IE tasks that cannot wait until at least the second cup of coffee.

9:00

Time for a weekly WIP (work-in-progress) call with a client in the EdTech sector, which follows the usual pattern: 10-15 minutes of sharing tales from the weekend and catching up over the week that was, before getting down to the real work at hand. Today, we’re giving an update on a summer campaign, finalising a script for some videography, discussing a recent headline surrounding the state of school buildings, and sharing our thoughts on the episode 4 of The Diplomat.

10:00

The meeting finishes, the second coffee calls, and then I’m straight into actioning tasks from the WIP. I brief the now-signed-off script to our creative team and embed another video into the client’s website, then draft some email copy to support the summer campaign.

11:00

My tummy makes another grab for my attention with a loud grumble, so it’s time for a banana – 2023’s answer to ‘elevenses’. Trixie and Peach (our office 🐶s ) amble over for a piece of the fun, and I drop a chunk into their mouths. (Perk of being a B2B content writer in a dog-friendly office = unlimited snuggles 😎 ).

PR is next on my to-do list, so I start outreaching two recent thought-leadership articles for a T&L (transport and logistics) client. I know where I’d like the pieces to place, but I also spend some time looking for new/upcoming and alternative publications that might also be interested in these angles.

Once that’s done, it’s time for this B2B content writer to have their third and final coffee of the day.

12:15

Having made the executive decision to turn all my Outlook and Teams notifications off to preserve an uninterrupted period of focus, I check the apps for anything pressing. Unsurprisingly, there’s amazement over the Barbie movie’s latest marketing extravaganza – a Google Easter egg – so I take a quick look at that, then share a few copy ideas with a colleague for an upcoming LinkedIn ad campaign and proofread a collaborative GreenTech blog for our Halston Group website.

12:30

Lunchtime! I’ve got a summer office staple – a chicken and couscous salad complete with a massive dollop of tzatziki and a wedge of bread and butter thrown in for good measure. The sun’s come out for us today, so there’s a spring (summer) in my step during my standard lunch venture around our home in Chapel Allerton while listening to the latest episode of My Therapist Ghosted Me (10/10 would recommend).

13:30

Members of our team have assembled to finalise a manufacturing client’s strategy that we’re presenting later this week. We check our original ideas align across the mix of marketing activities we conduct for them, which involves social media, website content and management, and PR. We sub things out that no longer feel as relevant and replace with more current and targeted ideas.

14:45

Proofreading o’clock. Today I’m looking over a month’s worth of social media copy and a couple of blogs for the same manufacturing client as the meeting before. I love reading over other people’s work to see how they’re explaining something niche or expressing a powerful point – not only am I always learning something new, but it helps me to constantly evaluate my own copywriting. In the world of copy, it’s well-advised that to be the best writer, you’ve got to be the best reader.

15:30

The kettle’s on again, and this time I’m accompanying a cup of Earl Grey (I’m not a full Yorkshire lass just yet!) with a slice of homemade banana bread. I usually bring my bakes to share with the rest of the office, but this was my last slice and there was no way I was going to ration it between 13 of us! 🫖

I open up a draft of a webpage I started last week for our own Halston B2B site. I very rarely write and submit copy for review on the same day, unless it’s properly ‘urgent’ – like an immediate turnaround otherwise the world will crumble.

I write best in the morning and edit best in the afternoon a few days later. In my two years at HB2B, I’ve not yet seen 4pm where I haven’t thanked myself for the 900 words of scrawl I put down the morning before, which acts as the base for me to fine-tune into something decent. And end the working day feel satisfied, something I think we can all relate to!

This particular webpage I’m working on is all about copywriting, which does bring a teensy sense of pressure. My brief is to raise awareness of our B2B copywriting service and showcase both the expertise and portfolio of work of our content team. It makes sense the task has landed in my inbox, but I won’t pretend it’s not oddly tricky to put into words how our team crafts B2B copy specific to our industries day-in, day-out!

16:45

I finalise the bulk of the copy for the webpage, leaving a few sentences highlighted to slam-dunk first thing tomorrow when my brain’s fresh and recharged.

I send a couple of memes to colleagues via Teams to celebrate some wins that day, drop my manager an update on my current work, and check that there aren’t any emails in my inbox that can’t wait until tomorrow morning.

17:00

Now for the 20-minute walk home, and despite it being 99% uphill, the sun’s still out which puts my out-of-breath-ness to the back of my mind. I’m playing tennis this evening, so it’s a quick and nutritious dinner of beans on toast ahead of making my first serve at 6pm.

Before falling asleep, I read a few chapters of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Favour – a childhood-turned-adulthood series favourite, and the perfect way of making sure I get some ‘personal’ reading in each day ready to spark some ideas for the next. ⭐

Well that’s been my day as a Senior B2B Content Writer – keep your eyes peeled for what the rest of the Halston B2B team gets up to…
