This commitment inspires us to rethink how we operate, investigating our digital marketing practices, social values, right down to our office waste management. Taking a holistic view, we hope to reshape our operations to ensure we limit our environmental footprint at all touchpoints and operate as an ethical, people-focused business.

Our Environmental Footprint

As part of our journey to become an eco-conscious marketing agency, we have been uncovering the factors contributing to our environmental footprint. Below are the key areas we have identified.

1. Office

We currently occupy a 1,400 square foot office in a shared building, and based on the facility’s Environmental Manager’s calculations, our estimated consumption over 2024 was 30,239 KWh across gas and electricity, which is equivalent to 11.9 metric tons of carbon dioxide (CO2). The facility is taking action to lessen the environmental impact of the building, and we look to align with their objectives.

2. Staff Commuting

Due to the lack of public transport infrastructure surrounding our office, driving by car is often the only viable option for our team members. However, we limit driving and the associated carbon emissions by operating a hybrid working model where our employees are only required to be in the office two days a week, and we try to prioritise Teams calls with clients to avoid additional travel. Using a specialist carbon calculator, we found that our annual commuting carbon emissions across all team members was 4,077 kg C02 eq, which is only equivalent to 0.9 gasoline-powered vehicle being driven for the year.

3. Digital Storage

All form of digital activities has an associated carbon footprint due to servers they are hosted on, which have high energy consumption demands for both the running and cooling. Each of our internal documents and client marketing outputs are stored in our Microsoft Sharepoint, which when reviewing our footprint, we found that we were storing over 1,237 GB of data, equating to 206 GB per retainer client and Halston B2B.

4. Website Carbon Footprint

The backbone of all marketing activities is a website, but it once again relies on servers to operate. We currently host 8 websites, 2 on SquareSpace and 6 on WordPress Engine. To uncover the associated carbon footprint of our website we utilised Website Carbon, and found that the Halston B2B homepage had a web page rating of E, which whilst above the global average is still below where we would like to see it. In the interim, we have implemented lower-sized imagery and integrated plugins such as Jetpack that reduce bandwidth consumption.

Lessening our Environmental Impact

At Halston B2B, we continue to explore new ways in which we can operate more sustainably, alongside driving social value for our employees and the wider community.

To achieve this, we commit to:

Reducing our digital storage, by deleting all hosted content off Microsoft Sharepoint once a project has come to an end or three years for long-standing retainer clients.
2. In the next five years, transition the Halston B2B website to a system that is built with sustainable design.
Exploring alternative travel methods such as ‘Cycle to Work’ schemes to limit carbon emissions related to commuting.
Expanding volunteer and charity initiatives, offering employees the option to choose charities and have dedicated volunteer days.
Ensuring to have over 80% of our clients operate in the climate space or clearly ethical, demonstrated through sustainability or social value commitments.

Sustainability Initiatives

We are always looking to uncover small sustainable wins, that in the long term can have a considerable impact. To add to this, we ensure our sustainable practices are inclusive, so our team is empowered to contribute new suggestions and be actively involved in actioning sustainable change.

1. Tree Planting

In July 2024, we began partnering with local Yorkshire company, Make it Wild. Make it Wild’s purpose is to protect nature, and they do this by offering tree planting and other nature dedication activities to drive biodiversity across their 26-acre location. To date, Make it Wild have planted over 80,000 trees, and Halston B2B has and continues to contribute to this impressive figure. For every new client we onboard, we plant a tree in their name, and so far, have planted 6 trees.

2. Website Hosting

We are proud to say that the Halston B2B website is hosted on a server powered by renewable electricity. Using the Green Web Dataset curated by the Green Web Foundation, we have been able to source evidence that all of the sites hosted in our WordPress Engine are powered by green energy.

3. Office Waste Management

We have implemented new waste management practices to ensure proper recycling and waste disposal. We have introduced new recycling bins, which include a composting bin, so our employees are able to separate recyclable materials and ensure food waste can be converted into a valuable soil amendment.

4. Clean Creatives

As a marketing agency, creative design is a huge component of our output. Our designers have been searching for ways to minimise the environmental impact of both the creation and hosting of creative assets. As a first step, our team has transitioned many of our clients’ social assets over to Canva, where all assets are hosted on AWS, which runs on 100% renewable energy. We will continue to innovate and seek the most optimal platforms over the coming years.

Sustainable Storytelling

Aside from our own sustainable commitments, we are consistently supporting our clients on their sustainability journey, with thoughtful and transparent comms. We seek to amplify the impact of sustainability-conscious and ethical business through sustainable storytelling. This could be a ClimateTech business looking to build awareness of their solution, or a manufacturer making considerable changes towards a circular system, either way, they both have a sustainable story to tell. We advocate for sustainable transparency and help clients navigate this new and challenging topic.

Social Impact

At Halston B2B, we’re passionate about delivering pro bono work to worthy and inspiring companies that make a real difference in their communities. Over the years we have delivered an array of pro bono work for companies that need to get their message out there. We were honoured to partner with the Alzheimer’s Society and NHS RDASH on a pro bono project to develop the visual identity for Mindset, a vital healthcare service dedicated to supporting individuals and families affected by dementia. We crafted a logo and comprehensive brand guidelines that balance professionalism with warmth and accessibility. In another meaningful collaboration with Out Together, a charity that unites LGBTQ+ generations in Yorkshire, our marketing executives developed a compelling fundraising video to feature at their annual fundraising ball, helping raise approximately £20,000 on debut night.
