Turning Sustainable Production Strategies into Marketing Opportunities

Sustainability is no longer simply a box to tick. Manufacturers are under growing pressure to reduce emissions, use resources more efficiently and demonstrate measurable progress across production, while customers are paying closer attention to the businesses they choose to work with.

For manufacturers already investing in more sustainable processes, this creates an opportunity beyond reducing environmental impact. The work being done across energy efficiency, materials, waste reduction, supply chains and production can become a valuable part of their brand story.

But communicating environmental progress effectively takes more than adding an ‘eco-friendly’ message to your website. Effective sustainability marketing needs to show customers what has changed, why it matters and whether the claims being made can be backed up.

Start With Understanding Your Environmental Impact

Before creating sustainability campaigns or adding new messaging to your website, start with the evidence you already have. This could include reductions in energy use or waste, changes to materials, improvements in production efficiency, certifications, environmental targets or progress against previous performance.

The more specific the evidence, the stronger the story. Saying a product is ‘more sustainable’ tells a potential customer very little. Explaining that a manufacturing process uses less energy, reduces material waste or incorporates a higher proportion of recycled content gives them something tangible to assess.

This is where good data becomes a marketing asset. An IEA survey of 1,000 industrial firms across 14 countries found that around 80% see energy efficiency as key to maintaining their competitive edge, while around 70% reported returns of more than 10% from efficiency measures implemented over the previous five years. The results highlight the value of measuring these improvements, giving businesses tangible evidence they can use to demonstrate progress and communicate the commercial impact of their work.

Turn Your Progress into a Story Customers Care About

Sustainability messaging can quickly become generic. ‘We’re committed to a greener future’ might sound positive, but it doesn’t tell a potential customer why they should choose you.

The stronger approach is to connect sustainability marketing activity with the issues your customers actually care about. Does a change in material reduce waste without compromising performance? Has a more efficient process helped reduce energy use or operating costs? Can your supply chain offer greater resilience as well as a lower environmental impact?

For example, a decision to change materials could become a piece of technical content explaining why the alternative was chosen, what it changes and where it performs best. A process improvement could become a case study backed by measurable results. A new certification could support a broader campaign around your environmental credentials.

Allied Glass, now Verallia UK, provides a good example of this approach. As part of its wider rebrand, we moved the focus of its communications beyond individual bottle projects to showcase the sustainability work taking place within the business and, importantly, how this could help customers make their own offerings more sustainable. This gave sustainability a role in the overall brand proposition, rather than treating it as a standalone message.

Take the Message Beyond Your Report

Credible sustainability marketing needs more than good copy. It needs evidence. That could mean using data to demonstrate progress, creating detailed case studies, developing sustainability reports or using technical content to explain the thinking behind an environmental improvement.

We saw this first-hand with A.W. Hainsworth, where we helped transform complex sustainability data into a clearer, more engaging report. The work brought together information including greenhouse gas emissions, water consumption, future ESG ambitions and measurable targets, giving the business a more effective way to communicate its progress.

The same principle applies across your wider marketing. With our support, Imageco has used its sustainability credentials across content, social media, PR and paid campaigns, helping turn its environmental activity into a key part of its brand and thought-leadership strategy. The result is not simply saying you’re sustainable but showing customers what that means in practice.

Make Sustainability Part of the Bigger Picture

Sustainability shouldn’t just live in a report that customers have to search for. If it’s genuinely part of your business, it should appear wherever it is relevant to the customer journey.

That could mean creating sustainability-focused website content, building SEO around the questions buyers are asking, sharing technical insights on LinkedIn, developing sales literature, using PR to communicate milestones or creating campaigns around specific sustainability initiatives.

Verallia is a strong example of how we’ve helped turn sustainability expertise into marketing. We developed content and social strategies that highlighted Verallia’s position in sustainable glass packaging and strengthened its thought-leadership position, contributing to a 147% increase in LinkedIn engagement.

The same principle applies across your sustainability marketing. Your website, sales materials, social channels and sales team should communicate the same message, adapted to each stage of the buying journey. For manufacturers already making meaningful progress, bringing that message together across your marketing can turn sustainability into a competitive advantage, giving customers a clear and credible reason to choose you.
